Adopting a cat and not dumping it

For the past few days I have been spotting out further adult cats in our street. Cats I haven’t seen before and they must be pretty new in the hood. But …. they are adult cats and no new – born kittens ! Does this maybe mean that people just dumped their house cats ?

It always drives me mad when people are considering to adopt a cat. Whether a kitten or a grown up cat. Actually most people want a kitten because it is easier to teach the rules of the house. At least this is what humans think and up to a certain point this may be true. However, a cat is a cat ! Whether a kitten or an adult. And cats love to discover their environment, they love to hunt and chase anything moving. Even a flying feather or a fly. As soon as they start chasing, they forget about their “manners” and only see their object. This is what they want. Even if this means to climb onto tables or kitchen counters. Plates can fly through the air but you cannot stop the cat. πŸ™‚

My cat Jerry is very much into my shoe laces. πŸ™‚ She got lots of colourful rubber balls and some cardboard from an empty toilet paper roll. The balls are her most favourite hunting object though. In other words, when you have a pet, your house may not be that organized and clean anymore. Here a few crumbs of litter and there thrown over shoes. πŸ™‚ You should take this into consideration before adopting a cat.

The second reason why people prefer adopting a kitten is because they are sooooo cute. Yes, they are but it only takes a few months until they are grown up. Teenagers and not adults yet but much bigger. Then the cat may not be so cute anymore and even develop a mean bully character. With a kitten you never know what you get. A nice loving cat or the worst bully.

Once a kitten turns into an adult and is not that cute anymore, many people simply loose interest. The cat doesn’t have to be mean but people may still want to get rid of it and dump it back into the street. A pet costs money and so does a cat. Food, vet, the liquid against flees or litter. It is expensive and I rather don’t want to know what a dog costs. Especially the money you spend on going to the vet.

Furthermore, having an animals also means to deal with it. Neither a dog nor a cat want to be placed into a corner and only sit there. Besides toys, a cat needs love. Lots of love and Jerry wants to sit on my lap and be petted. If I stop petting her, spoiled brat yells as me. πŸ™‚

In other words, you have to play with your pet and, at the same time, show your love. Thus, before adopting a cat, please take all these points into consideration ! Are you able to love and care for your cat when it is not a kitten anymore but an adult ? Are you willing to share some time with your pet ? Let alone the costs for food, etc.

The worst you can do to a cat is throwing it into the street. As a house cat, it doesn’t know how to fight and to be mean. It has never developed the sense for survival and the street cat world is more than dangerous.
